CITY OF SANTA MONICA – RFQ – Fire Station #1

The City of Santa Monica Arts Commission, through its peer panel selection process, is seeking qualifications from Southern California-based artists for the design of public art for the new Fire Station #1 building. About Fire Station #1:The City is completing design  of a new 25,000 square foot above-grade fire station at 1337-45 7th Street, to replace the existing Fire Station No. 1 which is also on  7th Street . The proposed new facility will include subterranean parking for staff, apparatus bays, staff dormitories, offices and storage requirements for personal protection equipment. The new station building will be fronted with floor-to-ceiling glass and feature an antique fire truck inside the front bay of the building that will be visible from the street. There are opportunities for artwork in the planter areas along the front of the building on 7th Street, in the lobby area—including the possibility of a suspended work, and the south wall of the community/training room.

ELIGIBILITY: This competition is open to artists/artist teams living or working in Southern California—defined as San Louis Obispo, Kern, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Orange, Riverside, San Diego and Imperial Counties. Previous experience in public art is desired but not required. The selected artist must be able to meet the City’s contract requirements (See Exhibit B) and be available to meet several times with City staff, the project team and City advisory boards and commissions.

BUDGET: The all-inclusive budget for design, fabrication and installation is $150,000. This budget covers all project related expenses—including travel, presentation materials and insurance.
